ASUU-BUK Condemns Federal Government for Unpaid Promotion Arrears and Allowances
The union further criticized the non-payment of Earned Academic Allowances (EAA). "Despite the allocation of N50 billion for EAA in the 2023 National Budget, ASUU members in all federal universities have yet to receive any payment," the statement read.
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Bayero University Kano (BUK) chapter, has voiced concerns regarding the Federal Government's failure to pay promotion arrears for its members. Despite being promoted to the professorial cadre for three consecutive years (2020, 2021, and 2022), many members have not received their arrears.
ASUU-BUK Chairman, Comrade Ibrahim Siraj, highlighted this issue during a news conference at the union’s secretariat on Friday. Siraj emphasized that numerous academics across Nigerian universities are also awaiting their promotion arrears and salary adjustments.

Additionally, ASUU-BUK addressed the chronic under-funding of public universities, citing a United Nations benchmark recommending 15 to 20 percent of the national budget for education. However, Nigeria's allocation has hovered between 5 and 6 percent over the past decade, which the union finds unacceptable.
