ASUU Condemns Advertisement for UNIABUJA’s Vice Chancellor Position

According to Dr. Ugoh, the Universities Miscellaneous Provision Act 1993 (as amended) 2003 and 2012 clearly stipulates the process for advertising vacancies for the position of a Vice Chancellor. The Union emphasized that the Governing Council, not any other organ, is empowered to initiate the process of appointing a new Vice Chancellor when there is a vacancy.

ASUU Condemns Advertisement for UNIABUJA’s Vice Chancellor Position

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), University of Abuja branch, has voiced its rejection of the advertisement for the institution’s vice chancellor position. The current management, led by Prof Abdulrasheed Na’Allah, recently placed an advertorial in a national daily regarding the vacancy.

Addressing a press conference in Abuja, Dr. Sylvanus Ugoh, the chairperson of the University’s ASUU branch, stated that the advertorial did not adhere to relevant laws and was therefore unacceptable to the Union and its members.

The decision was made following a congress held on March 19, 2024, in Abuja, where urgent issues were reviewed. The Union expressed concern about the negative impact of the federal government’s actions and inactions on the University's administration, particularly at the University of Abuja.

ASUU urged intending applicants to refrain from applying until due process is followed. The Union also condemned illegal appointments of acting Deans of Faculties and the Provost College of Health Sciences by the current administration, highlighting instances of recruitment without due process.

The Union called on the Minister of Education to withdraw the illegal advertisement for the vacant Vice Chancellor position in compliance with the laws establishing the University of Abuja.
