ASUU kicks as Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University announces resumption of academic activities

The Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai, Chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has kicked against the planned resumption of academic activities in the university.

The university management had in a statement signed by its Deputy Registrar, Information, Baba Akote, disclosed that the second semester would commence on September 5.

According to the statement, the university’s Governing Council gave the directive at its 55th regular meeting held on Tuesday.

“Equally, all staff are expected to resume work the same day. Students are please advised to heed to this special announcement in their own interest,” the statement read.

Reacting, the university’s ASUU Secretary, Mohammed Lakan, told our correspondent that lecturers would not heed the directive.

He insisted that the local chapter of the union had during an emergency meeting on Tuesday domesticated the resolution of the National Headquarters’ resolution to continue with the strike indefinitely.

”They are on their own. The state university is still on strike and I know that state universities do benefit from the ASUU struggle.

“So, for us to think of opting out at this point is not ideal for the university. So we are still on strike. And we have submitted a letter to the management to that effect,” the unionist added.
