ASUU Threatens Nationwide Strike Over Unmet Demands

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has threatened to embark on a nationwide strike over the Federal Government's failure to implement agreements and resolve ongoing issues in Nigeria's university system.

The union is frustrated by the government's inaction, particularly regarding the 2009 agreement that aimed to provide funding for revitalizing public universities.

The union is pushing for the implementation of the Needs Assessment Programme, designed to provide funds for infrastructure development and state-of-the-art equipment in public universities. ASUU has also expressed opposition to the proposed scrapping of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), emphasizing its positive impact on tertiary institutions.

If the Federal Government fails to address these issues, ASUU may be forced to embark on a nationwide strike, disrupting academic activities across universities. The union had previously given a 21-day ultimatum to the government to resolve the outstanding issues, and with no resolution in sight, a strike appears imminent.

The strike would likely have significant implications for the academic calendar and the overall education system in Nigeria. The government is under pressure to address ASUU's demands and find a solution to the ongoing impasse.
