Dr. Gentle E. Emelah, the Bayelsa State Commissioner for Education, responded to urgent concerns raised by students at the Captain Samuel Owonaro Academy, formerly known as the Ijaw National Academy (INA) Kaiama. Promptly cutting short his Sunday morning activities, Dr. Emelah visited the institution to investigate the issues firsthand.
During his visit, Dr. Emelah engaged directly with the students, who reported several pressing problems including damage to hostel facilities, irregular water supply, power outages, and the alleged diversion of raw food items by kitchen staff. These issues, students claimed, had contributed to recent unrest at the school.
In addressing the students, Dr. Emelah reassured them of the government’s commitment to their welfare. He emphasized that the academy, a prestigious institution where top students from all local government areas are admitted on full scholarships, remains a priority for the state government. Dr. Emelah noted that a team had recently completed an assessment of the school's facilities and that infrastructural upgrades are planned, including minor repairs to the hostels during the forthcoming flood break.
Regarding the kitchen staff, Dr. Emelah warned that any further diversion of food would not be tolerated, promising strict action against those caught in the act. He also pledged to review the school’s food budget to better align with current market prices amid economic challenges.
Addressing the issue of water supply, the Commissioner directed the Principal to ensure that water is pumped during the night to avoid shortages in the morning. Additionally, Dr. Emelah arranged for a new 200KVA power plant to be delivered by the Bayelsa State Electricity Company to enhance power reliability.
Dr. Emelah urged students to remain focused on their studies, stressing that the government is aware of and addressing their challenges. He also took the opportunity to commend the female students for maintaining a clean hostel and advised the male students on the importance of personal hygiene.
The Commissioner concluded his visit by praising the school's staff for their dedication and promising that the government would soon address their concerns as well. Dr. Emelah was accompanied by Mrs. Biboye Ogolo, Director General of the Directorate for Schools Inspections and Quality Services, and Dcns. Patricia Akpi, Director of Welfare Services at the Ministry of Education.
Overall, Dr. Emelah’s visit underscored the government's commitment to improving the conditions at Captain Samuel Owonaro Academy and supporting both students and staff.
