The 2023 Annual General Meeting and Convention of the Bayero University Kano Alumni Association (BUKAA) was a resounding success, marked by esteemed deliberations and a commitment to advancing education as the linchpin for societal progress.

Governor Umar Namadi of Jigawa State, an esteemed alumnus of Bayero University, echoed the sentiment that education stands as the pivotal determinant of societal advancement. Speaking nostalgically of his time at the institution, Governor Namadi emphasized the pivotal role education plays, starting from the foundational levels up to tertiary institutions.

 

"Education remains the bedrock for producing quality individuals crucial for societal development," remarked Governor Namadi in his keynote address at the Convocation Arena on Saturday, December 16, 2023.

Highlighting the challenges within the education sector, Governor Namadi urged collective action to support educational reforms, emphasizing the indispensable role alumni play in supporting alma maters through financial contributions and infrastructure development.

Prof. Sagir Adamu Abbas, the Vice-Chancellor, welcomed attendees and stressed the significance of alumni associations in fostering a strong connection with universities, advocating for mutual collaboration to enhance the educational experience for future generations.

The Vice-Chancellor proudly presented Bayero University's impressive statistics: over 40 years of existence, 40,000 students across five campuses, numerous departments, institutes, directorates, and accredited programs. He also underscored the institution's international recognition by Times Higher Education (THE), ranking BUK at 1,016 out of 29,000 universities worldwide.

 

Prof. Nasiruddeen Usman, representing the Caretaker Committee of BUKAA, emphasized the crucial role of alumni in university management and resource mobilization. He highlighted initiatives, including an interactive website facilitating communication, program organization, fee payment, and showcasing the association globally.
