The Vice Chancellor of the University Calabar, Prof. Florence Banku Obi has Charged Medical and Dental graduate physicians to be shining examples by emulating their lecturers and predecessors who have made the University proud.

The Vice Chancellor of the University Calabar, Prof. Florence Banku Obi has Charged Medical and Dental graduate physicians to be shining examples by emulating their lecturers and predecessors who have made the University proud.

Prof Florence Obi gave the charge while opening the 54th Physicians Oath-Taking Ceremony, (Sponsio Academica) held at the Institution's International Conference Center.15 Dental surgeons were among 83 graduands licensed while 68 were from the medical class.

Speaking at the event, the Vice Chancellor stated that the University of Calabar is known to have produced quality and qualified Doctors spread across the world who are making the University proud, even as she expressed the belief that this set of graduates will not disappoint the institution.

The University Administrator further charge the 83 graduate physicians comprising 15 BDS and 68 MBBCH to go forth and shine as beacons of light from the University of Calabar.

In her words; "You will go out as our great ambassadors found worthy in character and learning. Always be shining examples, emulating those who have gone before you, emulating the worthy character of your lecturers who have Laboured to produce you.

I pray God gives you the mind to serve and work according to the oath you are taking today."

Prof. Obi also commended the graduates for their efforts despite the challenges faced during their study, saying, "All your struggles and night readings have paid off, and I am happy you made it."

The Provost of the College of Medical Sciences, Unical Prof. Ngim E. Ngim commended the graduates for their commitment towards their academic pursuit, notably, their perseverance despite the daunting challenges.

Prof. Ngim charged the graduands not to forget their Alma Mater, stick to the code of ethics of their noble professions and note, that the patient should be the centre of all their attention.

He commended the Vice Chancellor for providing the enabling environment which assisted immensely in the quality of training offered to the graduates.

The Registrar, Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN), Dr Fatima Kyari, represented by Dr Enejo Abdul charged the graduates to shun all forms of unethical practices and carry on their professional mandate with the highest level of discipline and commitment.

The 54th Sponsio Lecturer, Prof. Martin Madu Meremikwu in a lecture titled "Evidence-Based Medicine (EBM): Toolkit for Lifelong Learning" called on the new Doctors to stick to the ethics and demands of the profession and to continue to learn and show evidence that they have learned.

Prof. Meremikwu, a professor of Pediatrics and Clinical Epidemiology, at the University of Calabar stated that continuous learning is not optional for Doctors, hence, the need for some skill and knowledge content that will make it easy to continue to learn throughout their practice life and thus remain relevant in a challenging work environment.

One of the Overall Best Graduating Students, Dr. Eigbire-Molen Oseremen Claire in a valedictory speech, acknowledged the Management of the University and the College, her Teachers and Medical Elders for the quality of training the graduating classes were exposed to.

She pledged on behalf of her class to remain humble and noble while engaging in their professional calling.

Dr Eigbire-Molen Oseremen Claire and Dr. Mbabuike Notrick Ikechukwu emerged Best Graduating Students in MBBCH and BDS class respectively, carting home deserving awards and mouthwatering cash prizes from the University Management.
