The Centre for Housing and Sustainable Development, University of Lagos in collaboration with the School of Social Sciences, Leeds Beckett University City Campus, Leeds is calling for applications for the British Academy Writing Workshops 2022, from researchers based in Nigerian and West African universities with research interests in migration, forced displacement and livelihood transformation.
Forced migration and displacement is on the increase across Nigeria. Despite millions of people being forcibly displaced and extensive research on the subject matter, there is an underrepresentation of scholars from West African institutions publishing in high quality international journals, thus resulting in limited contextualised knowledge production.
The writing workshops are designed to support early and mid-career researchers to develop excellent writing skills and ultimately produce scholarly articles for publication in high impact journals. The resulting publications will enrich scholarship in Africa and bring important empirical and theoretical contributions into global knowledge circulations.
Furthermore, the workshops will afford participants the opportunity to become part of an emerging cohort of researchers in the field of migration and forced displacement in Nigeria and to develop international networks with academics, editors and funding bodies. We envisage direct mentoring between selected participants and leading scholars and editors of major journals in the subject areas.
The workshop is organised by Associate Professor of Politics and International Relations, Leed Beckett University, Dr. Olayinka Ajala; Professor of Urban Management and Governance, and Co-Director of Centre for Housing and Sustainable Development, University of Lagos, Prof. Taibat Lawanson, and Senior Lecturer in Political Science, Benue State University, Makurdi, Dr. Faeren Agaigbe.
Participation at the workshops would be hybrid – a series of online workshops and a three-day physical workshop. Participants are expected to commit to developing at least one high-quality journal article. The physical workshop will be held at the University of Lagos in November, 2023. Only costs related to the workshops including travel to Lagos, accommodation, feeding and transport will be covered.
The workshop is funded by the British Academy with support from: Leeds Beckett University, UK; University of Lagos and Benue State University, Makurdi.
