BUK Dress Code Committee Issues Strict Decency Mandate for Students

The Dress Code Committee of Bayero University, Kano (BUK) has issued an urgent notice to the student body, reinforcing the institution's mandatory Dress Code Policy across all university premises.

The directive comes after observations that some students have not been complying with the established rules in key areas such as lecture theatres, laboratories, and examination halls. 

Under Section 6 of the university's rules and guidelines, several types of "indecent dressing" are strictly forbidden. The prohibited list includes:

Revealing Outfits: Short, bare-back, or clinging dresses; skirts above the knee; and transparent or tight-fitting clothing like body-hugging jeans.

Indecent Casual Wear: Tattered or "crazy" jeans with holes, shorts (except for sanctioned sporting activities), and wearing undergarments such as singlets or boxers publicly.

Inappropriate Inscriptions: T-shirts or vests featuring obscene or indecent pictures and inscriptions.

Male Grooming: The policy specifically forbids dreadlocks, plaited or woven hair, and the wearing of earrings by male students.

Other Restrictions: Tattoos, the use of jackboots (unless for protection), and wearing sunglasses or goggles in lecture rooms without medical grounds are also prohibited.

The university clarified that these prohibitions apply everywhere on campus, with the sole exception being the privacy of students' rooms within the halls of residence. Additionally, students are expected to adhere to any further specific dress codes mandated by their respective faculties, departments, or professional callings.
