Dr. Fatima Kyari Becomes First Female Consultant Oral And Maxillofacial Surgeon From Northern Nigeria

Dr. Fatima Kyari made history in November 2025 as the first female Consultant Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon from Northern Nigeria.

She is also currently the only woman from the region to attain the rank and serves at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, LUTH.

Kyari specializes in complex surgical care of the face, mouth, and jaws. Her areas of focus include cleft lip and palate surgery and maxillofacial oncology. She works to help patients restore both health and quality of life.

Beyond clinical practice, Kyari is committed to surgical education. She serves as a Young Ambassador for AO CMF MENA, where she contributes to training, innovation, and the development of oral and maxillofacial surgery across the Middle East and North Africa.

Described as a trailblazer and mentor, Kyari said she hopes her achievement will inspire more young women in Northern Nigeria to pursue careers in medicine and surgery.
