The Vice-Chancellor of Ekiti State University (EKSU), Ado-Ekiti, Professor Babatola Ayodele, has called for the integration of sustainability concepts into Nigeria’s educational curriculum to equip students with the necessary skills to address global challenges.

Professor Ayodele, a scholar in Educational Management, made this appeal while delivering a keynote address at the 2nd International Conference of the Faculty of Education, Federal University, Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE). The event, held at the institution’s Fasina Conference Centre, attracted academics, policymakers, and education stakeholders.

Speaking on the need for educational transformation, Ayodele emphasized that education must go beyond preparing students for employment. He highlighted the importance of equipping learners with knowledge and competencies to tackle issues such as climate change, resource depletion, and social inequality.

“Transforming education for a sustainable future requires a holistic approach that includes inclusive policies, educational reforms, and innovative technologies,” he stated.

He further criticized the traditional education model, which focuses on memorization and standardized testing, describing it as inadequate in addressing contemporary challenges. He advocated for an inclusive system that eliminates socio-economic barriers such as poverty, discrimination, and inadequate learning resources.

The Vice-Chancellor of FUOYE, Professor Abayomi Fasina, represented at the event by his deputy, Professor Shittu, reinforced the significance of the conference’s theme in addressing critical educational challenges.

The conference, widely attended by stakeholders in the education sector, provided a platform for discussions on making education more inclusive and sustainability-driven.
