Federal Ministry of Agriculture Launches Innovation Initiative for Students; NAAS-UDUS to Lead Screening
The National Association of Agricultural Students (NAAS) at Usmanu Danfodiyo University Sokoto (UDUS), has announced a new innovation support initiative from the Federal Ministry of Agriculture aimed at agricultural students across Nigeria.
The announcement was made on the 27th of December, 2025, following the launch of a national innovation platform designed to encourage agricultural students to develop practical solutions to Nigeria’s food security challenges.
According to the circular, students are to submit practical ideas on a simple innovations to solve a major agricultural bottleneck in Nigeria, how technology can enable small holder farmers to eat five times more without increasing production costs, an agricultural value chajn the university can dominate and how a student can lead the innovation.
Under the programme, NAAS-UDUS will coordinate the submission and screening of student ideas within the Faculty of Agriculture. The best 10 student innovations will be selected and forwarded to the NAAS national body for further assessment.
Speaking with Digest Press, the President of NAAS UDUS chapter, Anas Bello, said the platform would expose students to real-world problem-solving beyond the classroom.
“This innovation platform will expose UDUS agricultural students to practical problem-solving beyond the classroom. It gives them the opportunity to transform academic knowledge into real-world solutions, develop entrepreneurial skills, gain national visibility through NAAS, and become job creators rather than job seekers,” he said.
Bello also expressed excitement over the initiative, describing it as a strong motivation for students.
“I feel excited and encouraged because it shows that the Federal Ministry of Agriculture recognizes the capacity of students to contribute meaningfully to national development. It reassures us that the voices and ideas of agricultural students are being valued at the national level,” he added.
