The Federal University of Transportation (FUT), Daura, has held its inaugural matriculation ceremony for the pioneer set of students enrolled in the institution. The historic event marked a significant milestone in the journey of the newly established university, which aims to advance education in the field of transportation and logistics.

President Bola Tinubu was represented at the ceremony by the Minister of Transportation, Said Alkali. The event also saw the presence of Adeoye Adeleye, the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Transportation, who served as the Guest of Honour. Mercy Ilori, the Director of Transport Planning and Coordination at the Federal Ministry of Transportation, attended the occasion as the ministry's representative on the university’s Governing Council.

The Federal University of Transportation, Daura was officially handed over to the Federal Government in May 2024 by the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC), following the completion of the $50 million project. Jason Zhang, Chairman of CCECC Nigeria, emphasized that the construction, which began in 2019, is a testament to the strong bilateral cooperation aimed at boosting education and infrastructure development in the region.

Earlier, in October 2023, the National Universities Commission (NUC) granted approval for 14 academic programs at the university. These programs include B.Eng. Civil Engineering, B.Eng. Electrical Electronics Engineering, B.Eng. Mechanical Engineering, B.Eng. Mechatronics Engineering, B.Eng. Railway Engineering, and B.Eng. Highway Engineering. Other courses offered are B.Sc. Aviation Management, B.Sc. Transport Management, B.Sc. Logistics and Supply Chain Management, B.Sc. Maritime Safety and Environmental Administration, and B.Sc. Railway Transport Management, along with B.Sc. Sea Port and Dry Port Management, B.Sc. Inland Waterways Safety and Environmental Administration, and B.Sc. Maritime Economics.

The establishment of the Federal University of Transportation, Daura, was legally confirmed when former President Muhammadu Buhari signed the bill into law in April 2023. The bill had earlier passed the Senate on April 6, 2022, and the House of Representatives on November 22, 2022. Although the university's gate bears the name "Muhammadu Buhari University of Transportation," its officially recognized title remains the Federal University of Transportation, Daura.

The inauguration of the first set of students signifies a promising start for FUT Daura, which aims to produce graduates capable of driving the growth of Nigeria's transportation sector and enhancing the nation’s infrastructure development.
