From Iwo Road Tutor to UI Trailblazer: The Remarkable Journey of Mubarak Olasunkanmi
The University of Ibadan (UI) community is celebrating the extraordinary academic feat of Mubarak Olasunkanmi, who has emerged as the Best Graduating Student in Petroleum Engineering for the 2025 academic session.
Graduating with First Class Honours and an elite Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 3.96/5.00, Mubarak also secured the position of the Second Best Graduating Student in the entire Faculty of Technology.
Mubarak’s academic transcript reflects a rare level of consistency. Out of the 85 courses taken throughout his five-year tenure, he achieved 81 'A' grades and only 4 'Bs'. His year-by-year performance demonstrates a relentless pursuit of excellence:
100 Level: 4.00/4.00
200 Level: 3.98/4.00
300 Level: 3.97/4.00
400 Level: 3.96/4.00
500 Level: 3.96/4.00
Behind the stellar numbers lies a story of profound sacrifice. Mubarak navigated significant financial and logistical hurdles, often moving between hostels and friends’ rooms to find stable environments for study.
To support his parents and fund his education, he balanced his rigorous engineering curriculum with a demanding side hustle—travelling from the UI campus to Iwo Road to conduct private tutorials.
"For many reasons, this achievement still feels unreal," Mubarak shared, reflecting on the long nights spent in reading rooms and the constant commute between his teaching jobs and his lectures.
In recognition of his academic and technical prowess, Mubarak has been officially inducted as a Graduate Member of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), marking his transition from a star student to a professional ready to contribute to Nigeria’s energy sector.
Mubarak Olasunkanmi stands as a testament to the power of perseverance and focus, proving that with determination, the bridge from humble beginnings to global excellence is within reach.
