From Loss to Legacy: The Inspiring Rise of UDUS’ Best Graduating Pharmacist with a 4.91 CGPA
Achieving academic excellence at the highest level is no small feat. For Pharmacist Sofiyyah Ismaeel Temitope, however, it became a reality shaped by dedication, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to her goals. Graduating with an exceptional CGPA of 4.91, she emerged as the Overall Best Graduating Student, setting a remarkable standard of excellence.
Her achievements extend far beyond this recognition. She distinguished herself as the Best Graduating Student in Clinical Pharmacy, Pharmaceutical and Medicinal Chemistry, Pharmacology, and Pharmaceutics and Pharmaceutical Technology, alongside numerous other awards. Her brilliance earned her recognition from prestigious bodies such as the Nigeria Association of Pharmacists in Academia, the Pharmaceutical Council of Nigeria, FPS Alumni, the Board of Fellows, and the Faculty of Pharmacy.
Born and raised in Ibadan, Oyo State, Sofiyyah had her entire early education within the city, attending schools owned by her father. Growing up in a family where excellence was a way of life, she developed a strong academic foundation early on. According to her, her parents were not overly strict, yet their brilliance and values shaped her profoundly. Excellence, she explained, was normal in her family, as both her parents and siblings shared the same drive. Her greatest inspiration came from her parents, as she aspired to emulate them, not only academically but also in her religious life.
Interestingly, her journey into Pharmacy was not initially planned. She had aspired to study Medicine at the University of Ibadan but was offered Agriculture instead. This unexpected outcome prompted her to reflect deeply on her strengths and interests. Although she briefly considered Engineering, she quickly realized she lacked passion for it. Determined not to pursue a path out of pressure or uncertainty, she chose Pharmacy, driven by her curiosity about how drugs work and her natural ability to grasp scientific concepts. From that point, she developed a genuine passion for the field, believing that Allah guided her decision.
Her admission into the Faculty of Pharmacy at Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, marked the true beginning of her journey of excellence. From her first year, she approached her studies with clarity and determination, combining academic focus with active involvement in extracurricular activities. Despite hearing discouraging remarks that achieving top grades in her institution was nearly impossible, she refused to be limited by such negativity.
Her hard work yielded exceptional results. From 100 level through 300 level, she recorded straight A’s, maintaining a perfect 5.00 CGPA during that period. Over the course of her studies, she completed 96 courses, earning an impressive 90 A’s, 5 B’s, and just 1 C. Like many high achievers, she experienced emotional moments along the way. She admitted feeling deeply disappointed upon receiving her first ‘B,’ as it disrupted her personal goal of maintaining a perfect record. Nevertheless, she remained focused and continued striving for excellence.
Despite her success, her journey was not without challenges. She encountered both joyful and difficult moments, acknowledging that there were times she felt overwhelmed and even broke down in tears. One of the most significant challenges she faced was the loss of her mother during her 200 level, a deeply emotional period that tested her strength. Yet, she remained resilient and committed to her goals.
By her 500 level, she revealed that her motivation had reduced, but something stronger sustained her resilience. She explained that resilience became her driving force, rooted in her belief that one cannot abandon what they have already started. This mindset carried her through the final stages of her academic journey.
Beyond academics, Sofiyyah demonstrated remarkable leadership and a strong desire to make an impact. She co-founded UDUYARS (Usmanu Danfodiyo University Young Antimicrobial Resistance Stewards) alongside her peers, contributing to initiatives that positively influenced the university community. Through this platform, she engaged in meaningful activities that shaped both her personal growth and the lives of others.
Her leadership journey was extensive. Within UDUYARS, she served as Co-Founder, Secretary General, Vice President, and Head of Communication and Strategy Management. She was also actively involved in PMSSN, where she served as Treasurer, a member of the Academic Committee, Qadimatul-Masjid, and Da’wah Chair Lady. In PANS, she contributed as Academic Director and a member of the Editorial Committee. Despite holding these roles, she maintained a humble disposition, noting that she was not particularly interested in politics or positions, even though she was often called upon to serve. Instead, she found fulfillment in providing academic support and motivating others.
Her excellence also earned her the Abdulaziz Sanni Foundation Scholarship from 200 level to 500 level, as well as recognition as one of the Top 20 Most Influential Students, further highlighting her impact beyond the classroom.
In terms of study habits, Sofiyyah emphasized understanding over memorization. She preferred long, focused reading sessions, often studying for one to two hours at a stretch. Even while managing multiple responsibilities, particularly in her 300 level, she maintained balance through discipline and effective time management.
Sofiyyah Ismaeel Temitope’s journey is a powerful reminder that success goes beyond intelligence. It is built on consistency, resilience, self-awareness, and purpose. Her story inspires students to pursue what they are genuinely passionate about, remain focused despite challenges, and refuse to let negativity define their limits.
