The Federal University of Lafia (FULafia) will soon adopt an online voting system, according to Vice-Chancellor Professor Shehu Abdul Rahman. This is a move aimed at enhancing transparency and integrity in student elections,

The announcement was made during the inauguration ceremony for the new officials of the Students Representatives Council (SRC) and Students Integrity Club (SIC). Professor Abdul Rahman highlighted that the introduction of e-voting is designed to mitigate electoral malpractices and address complaints within student associations.

The Vice-Chancellor emphasized the importance of student self-governance and warned against external interference in the university’s electoral processes. He stressed that it is essential for students to manage their own affairs independently to maintain the integrity of the elections.

Professor Abdul Rahman also expressed regret over recent cancellations of elections conducted by Nasarawa and Benue state student unions due to significant electoral breaches. He affirmed that under his administration, such breaches will not be tolerated, and students will not be allowed to unlawfully assume office.

“Our university is committed to integrity and excellence,” Professor Abdul Rahman said. “We must uphold these values and avoid any actions that contradict our principles.”

The Vice-Chancellor reiterated his commitment to encouraging students to excel academically, develop good character, and contribute positively to society. He acknowledged students as crucial stakeholders in the university’s management and encouraged them to use suggestion boxes and the Speak-Up programme to voice their concerns.

With this new initiative, FULafia aims to set a standard for democratic practices within academic institutions and ensure a fair and transparent electoral process for its student body.
