The Federal Government has granted Maranatha University, Lagos, a full license to operate as a private Christian university after meeting educational and operational standards.

The Federal Government of Nigeria has granted Maranatha University, Lagos, a full license to operate as a private university. The license, dated September 2, 2024, was signed by the Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, and the acting Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), Mr. Chris Maiyaki.

This full statutory license replaces the provisional one previously held by the Christian faith-based institution, which fulfilled the requirements of the Educational Acts Cap E3 of 2024, including meeting Benchmark Minimum Academic Standards (BMAS) and other operational guidelines. The NUC conducted a license review exercise from April 14 to 16, 2024, before issuing the full approval.

Maranatha University is built on a vision of faith, excellence, and integrity, aiming to contribute to tertiary education in Nigeria and globally. The institution offers four faculties, including Arts, Management and Social Sciences, Natural and Applied Sciences, Environmental Sciences, and Engineering, with 20 academic programs. The university operates from two campuses in Lagos, located at Okota-Isolo and Lekki-Epe Expressway. The Lekki campus, intended to host the proposed Faculty of Law and Basic Medical Sciences, is yet to commence academic activities.

Maranatha University’s facilities include secure residential accommodations, modern classrooms with interactive boards, practical labs, and a well-equipped central library. Religious education is compulsory, with joint staff and student fellowship sessions.

In its academic culture, the university has hosted distinguished speakers and conferences, including a lecture by Prof. Toyin Falola from the University of Texas at Austin on ‘Technologies and African Cultures’ and Dr. Victor Odumuyiwa from NITDA Hub, Unilag, on ‘Education Design and Delivery in the World of Robots and AI’. Maranatha University is also establishing linkages with both local and foreign institutions to expand its global reach.
