FUNAAB Champions AI Integration in Laboratory Science at 2026 World Lab Day

 The Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB) marked the 2026 World Laboratory Day today, April 23, 2026, with a powerful call to integrate Artificial Intelligence (AI) into modern scientific research. The event, held at the Postgraduate School Auditorium, was themed “AI in Research: Tools and Practical Use.”

Representing the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Babatunde Kehinde, the Dean of the Postgraduate School, Professor Olusiji Sowande, emphasized that AI should be viewed as a powerful complement to human expertise. He noted that FUNAAB is strategically leveraging AI-driven research to tackle national issues such as food security, agriculture, and environmental sustainability.

"AI continues to reshape global research practices," Professor Sowande stated, "but the effectiveness of laboratory science ultimately depends on how well professionals adapt to these emerging technologies."

While advocating for technological adoption, the Vice-Chancellor cautioned that digital literacy and ethical awareness must remain priorities. He warned that the misuse of AI tools could compromise research integrity, urging for structured capacity-building initiatives to ensure responsible deployment among staff and students.

The Director of the Directorate of Technologists and Technical Staff (DITTECS), Dr. 'Wunmi Abimbola-Okuneye, highlighted the university's ongoing investment in modern equipment and safety. She stressed that integrating AI is essential for refining experimental designs and minimizing human error, but reminded attendees that the "true strength of any laboratory lies in the competence and integrity of its personnel."

In his keynote lecture, the Director of Academic Information Systems (DACIS), Professor Olusegun Folorunso, urged laboratory professionals to align with global standards. He emphasized that the effective application of AI requires continuous professional development and strong digital competence to remain relevant in a tech-driven landscape.

The event concluded with a call for increased interdisciplinary collaboration, fostering synergy between scientists, technologists, and data experts to enhance FUNAAB’s global research competitiveness.
