FUNAAB Former Vice-Chancellor Loses Wife at 71
The Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB) has been thrown into mourning following the death of Prof. (Pastor) Elizabeth Abidemi Balogun, wife of the university’s 4th substantive Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Oluwafemi Olaiya Balogun.

She reportedly passed away on June 8, 2026, at the age of 71.
Prof. Elizabeth Abidemi Balogun was a distinguished academic, researcher, and retired Professor of Biochemistry from the Department of Biochemistry, University of Ilorin. Over the course of her career, she made significant contributions to teaching, research, and academic administration, earning wide respect within the academic community.
She also previously served at FUNAAB’s Department of Biochemistry, where she contributed to advancements in biochemical sciences. Her research focus included biochemical toxicology and phytomedicine, with a strong emphasis on antimalarial drug development. Her scholarly output and mentorship influenced numerous students and researchers in Nigeria and beyond.
During her career, she held several academic leadership roles, including Head of the Department of Physiology and Biochemistry, Sub-Dean of the Faculty of Life Sciences, and Head of the Department of Biochemistry. She was a Fellow of the Nigerian Society for Experimental Biology and the Nigerian Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.

In a condolence message, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Babatunde Kehinde, expressed deep sadness over her passing, describing her as an accomplished scholar, devoted Christian, and a woman of integrity whose life reflected excellence, humility, and service.
He noted that her contributions to higher education and scientific research would remain enduring, adding that the university community stands in solidarity with the Balogun family during this period of grief.
He prayed for the repose of her soul and for strength for the bereaved family to bear the loss.
Funeral arrangements will be announced by the family in due course.
