FUNAAB Launches Coffee Cultivation Project to Boost Agriculture and Economy

The Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB) has launched a coffee cultivation project to capitalize on the global coffee market. In early September 2024, the university planted 271 seedlings of Coffee Arabica on a 1.5-acre plot, with seedlings donated by Alhaji Salihu Imam, Chairman of the National Coffee and Tea Association of Nigeria.

In a progressive step towards agricultural development, the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB) has initiated a coffee cultivation project aimed at tapping into the lucrative global coffee market. This initiative highlights the university's commitment to advancing agricultural practices and supporting food security in Nigeria.

Recognizing coffee as one of the most valuable commodities exported by developing nations, FUNAAB has planted 271 seedlings of Coffee Arabica on a 1.5-acre plot. This endeavor aligns with reports indicating that over 75 million people worldwide rely on coffee for their livelihoods. The coffee seedlings were generously donated by Alhaji Salihu Imam, the Chairman of the National Coffee and Tea Association of Nigeria in Oyo State. The plants are projected to reach maturity and be ready for harvest within two years.

In addition to coffee cultivation, FUNAAB has also planted 42 seedlings of soursop alongside the coffee plants. This strategic diversification aims to optimize land use and contribute to the university's broader efforts in enhancing food security.
