FUNAAB Researchers Develop Predictive Model to Accelerate Elimination of Neglected Tropical Diseases in Nigeria

Researchers at the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), led by Professors Sam Olufemi Sam-Wobo and Olaniyi Olayiwola, in partnership with the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare (FMoHSW) and the Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI), have developed an innovative predictive tool to enhance Nigeria’s fight against Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs).

The tool, named the Prediction Model for Nigeria’s Neglected Tropical Diseases (PM-Nig-NTDs), integrates multiple variables to forecast the 10-year reinfection probability of disease-specific NTDs. According to Mr. Olasunkanmi Olajide, Acting Head of FUNAAB’s Directorate of Public Relations, the model is designed as a scientific and decision-support resource to strengthen national planning, post-elimination surveillance, and sustainable interventions for disease control and elimination.

The PM-Nig-NTDs model offers evidence-based forecasting insights, enabling policymakers and public health stakeholders to design targeted, efficient, and sustainable strategies aligned with Nigeria’s public health priorities and global health commitments.

The model was formally presented at the 2nd National Monitoring and Evaluation Meeting held from December 11 to 14, 2025, at Rockview Hotel Royale, Abuja, where it received widespread commendation from stakeholders. Mr. Fatai Oyediran, National Coordinator for NTDs in the Department of Public Health, praised the FUNAAB team for delivering the tool within the stipulated timeframe and announced plans to implement the model across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). He also encouraged the researchers to expand the framework to incorporate additional case-management and preventive chemotherapy NTDs.

Mr. Olajide noted that intellectual property rights for the model will be appropriately protected, and he called on meeting participants—including State NTD Coordinators, data managers, development partners, WHO representatives, and FMoHSW officials—to acknowledge the FUNAAB team for their significant contribution to Nigeria’s public health agenda and the 2030 global NTD elimination targets.
