A survivor and eyewitness of the 1999 incident, which claimed the lives of the then Students' Union Secretary-General, George Iwilade, popularly known as Afrika, and four other students, Adeleke reflected on his years of student activism and how the experience shaped his political philosophy.

Addressing students at the symposium, he said his decision to seek the governorship was motivated by a desire to translate the ideals and principles he had championed over the years into practical governance.
