The Federal University of Technology, Akure ,FUTA has hosted 400 level students of the Department of Forestry and Wildlife Management, Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta ,FUNAAB at the FUTA Forestry Plantation Site as part of the requirements of their Industrial Training Program. The camping exercise at FUTA commenced on Sunday, 30th of July and ended on Saturday, 5th of August 2023.
The Vice Chancellor ,Professor Adenike Temidayo Oladiji, while on a visit to the site ,commended the students for their admirable comportment and also for diligently applying themselves to learning from the tutors placed in charge of the exercise such as Professor Shadrach Akindele, Professor Segun Oladoye among others. She commended the efforts and contribution of Professor Shadrach Akindele and the School of Agriculture and Agricultural Technology (SAAT) for their unflinching commitment to fulfilment of the core mandates of the university which are Teaching, Research and use of Research to impact the community.
Professor Shadrach Akindele expressed appreciation to the Vice Chancellor for her support and making out time to check in on the students. He said it has been his utmost pleasure in embarking on the exercise with the students of FUNAAB and expressed optimism that the students would not go back empty handed as they have been taught and seen so much that the institution has to offer.
Professor Segun Oladoye, speaking on behalf of the 97 students from the department of Forestry and Wildlife Management (FUNAAB) appreciated the Vice Chancellor and her Team, which included Deputy Vice Chancellor , Academic Professor Taiwo Amos and the Dean , School of Agriculture and Agricultural Technology , Professor Oluwatooyin Osundahunsi , for welcoming them with open arms. He also expressed his gratitude to Professor Akindele for being a father and a mentor throughout their stay in the university and for making the study tour worthwhile, educative ,eventful and enlightening.
The students while talking about their experience said that through the camping exercise they have been exposed to many things FUTA has to offer in that area of study. They were particularly enthralled by the camping inventories and practical exercises which entailed forest measurement to determine the number of trees available in a particular area and the amount of carbon dioxide a tree has taken from the atmosphere.
The students were also taught how to use GIS (Geographic Information System) for marking and taking measurements of areas like large hectares of land and database development and analytic and how to use google hearts amongst other things.
