In line with the directives from the National Universities Commission (NUC), Federal University Otuoke (FUO) flagged off a capacity building workshop on “Implementation of the Core Curriculum and Minimum Academic Standards (CCMAS), Myschoolnews gathered.

During the opening ceremony, which held on Monday November 6, 2023, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Teddy Charles Adias, commended the zeal of the Academic Staff, demonstrated by an impressive turn out at the workshop.  In attendance at the flag – off ceremony were the University Librarian, Professor Felicia Edu-Uwem Etim, Deans of Faculties and Academic Staff of the University.

The training workshop is expedient as there is the need to build the capacity of Staff to effectively drive the innovative curriculum (CCMAS) adopted by the Nigerian University System (NUS), which is expected to take off in the upcoming 2023/2024 Academic Session. The Core Curriculum and Minimum Academic Standards (CCMAS) is a novel initiative of NUC focused on re-engineering the curriculum for improved outcomes.

The Core Curriculum and Minimum Academic Standards (CCMAS) is a paradigm shift from the existing curriculum (BMAS) hitherto employed in NUS. Curriculum of the NUS has, therefore, evolved through the Minimum Academic Standard (MAS), Benchmark-Minimum Academic Standard (BMAS) to the present CCMAS.

In her opening remarks during the opening ceremony of the workshop, the Chairperson of the University Curriculum Development Committee, Prof. (Mrs.)  Iheoma Adekunle took participants down the memory lane of the activities of NUC in relation to the CCMAS.

From Sensitization workshops organized for University leadership, Vice Chancellors, Deputy Vice Chancellors, Senate Chairs on 30% CCMAS Committees, Deans of Faculties, and Directors of Academic Planning. She pointed out Actions taken so far which include the Computation of 30% Institutional Addition to CCMAS and subsequent upload to NUC by most Universities and Where we are now which is the implementation of CCMAS. Prof. Adekunle also recapped the basic process flow involved in the computation of CCMAS. She stated that the Federal University Otuoke, has successfully uploaded all existing programmes to NUC and is poised to compute 30% CCMAS for all the new programmes that have recently received approval  from the NUC.

The Vice Chancellor reiterated the aptness of the workshop in view of the enormous tasks and challenges involved in the implementation of CCMAS, adding that time is of essence as CCMAS is to be effective for the 2023/2024 Academic Session.  The opening ceremony was climaxed with an interactive session that gave staff freedom to ask questions in order to clarify apparent grey areas regarding CCMAS.

Federal University Otuoke has strategically mapped out the training of Academic Staff on implementation of CCMAS in two phases that involve: (i) Facilitators’ Training (Train-the-Trainer) and (ii) Training of the Academic Staff with the latter being driven in Cohorts/Batches. The Facilitators after undergoing the Facilitators Training are expected to train the entire Academic Staff in cohorts/batches for efficiency and effectiveness. Facilitators’ Training was scheduled to commence on November 8, 2023.
