At the courtesy visit to the Vice Chancellor Professor Teddy Charles Adias on arrival, the Leader of the Team, Professor Eze Sabinus expressed his appreciation to the VC and the management of FUO for a very warm reception. He said the reason for the visit was just for Peer Review and promised to give an objective report on their findings in the Department.
Responding, the Vice Chancellor Professor Teddy Charles Adias welcomed them officially and thanked them for the visit. He pointed out in his speech that Biochemistry Department had scaled the accreditation fence five (5) years ago and so the NUC’s team were coming for a revisit.
Presenting his report at the end of their visit, the Leader of the NUC accreditation team Professor Eze, who was accompanied by Prof. Wence Mudu and Mr. Ochala Solomon thanked and appreciated the Vice Chancellor, management and the entire Staff of the Department for their hospitality and efficiency in their discharge of duties during the accreditation exercise.
He pointed out some observations about the Department noting that all students admitted into the Department met admission requirements, degree projects were of good quality and the practical works were good in terms of scope and coverage. Also, Internal Quality Assurance exists and is very effective. For course evaluation, the standard of tests and examination were good and academic regulation exists in the students handbook which is issued to them on registration. He observed that all staff are core to the subject area with about 86 per cent staff of the Department having a PhD. He however noted that while 90 per cent of staff had benefitted from staff development programmes, some non- academic staff were yet to benefit especially the technologists. Facilities were adequate, though there was no internet connectivity, safety measures in place and classrooms met the standard as in BMAS. He commented on the office spaces being inadequate and prayed the management to look into it.
In his final statements, he suggested that First class graduates be retained if possible so as not to loose them to blue chip companies.
In his response, the Vice Chancellor Professor Teddy Charles Adias thanked the Team for their observations and made a commitment for improvement pointing out that “we are a University in progress”. He however, made the Team understand that Tetfund does not support the training of technologists and so the University has to fund that from overhead costs. He pointed out that the University has a firm , completely equipped , modernised and functional ICT center and regretted that they did not get to see it in the course of their findings being constrained by time, and so internet connectivity was in progress. On the issue of office space, he informed the Team of the construction work nearing completion and assured the Team of speedy progress.
