CITN Yenagoa And District Society Visits FUOTUOKE Dean Faculty Of Management Sciences

The Executive Council of Yenagoa and District Society of the Chartered Institute of Taxation (CITN) paid a courtesy visit to the Dean, Faculty of Management Sciences, Professor Cletus Akenbor, Myschoolnews gathered.
In his address, the Leader of the CITN delegation who is the Chairman of the Yenagoa and District Society Sir Robert Lokoson, said the purpose of the visit was to solicit for the establishment of a Bachelor’s Degree programme in Taxation. He said this will support the mission of the Institute to develop Taxation as a specialization, independent of Accounting and Law. He offered to make available to the Faculty a copy of CITN Curriculum Content for Taxation to support the development of the Taxation Degree programme. He equally said the Institute was interested in having a Tax Club in the university to provide avenue to give career talks to students so as to build their interest in Taxation. He said the Tax Club will also give students the chance to participate in other programmes of the Institute such as essay and quiz competitions and to benefit from scholarships and other cash awards. He also used the occasion to inform the Dean that CITN week will be held in November, 2023 and requested the Dean and other members of the Institute in the University to be part of the events. The Chairman also informed the Dean that the effort to establish Yenagoa and District Society started 20 years ago and today the membership strength is over 250 members.
The Dean, Faculty of Management Sciences, Professor Akenbor welcomed the delegation to the Faculty and thanked them for their interest in partnering with the University to develop Taxation as an independent specialization. He recalled when during 2016 accreditation exercise, he had made a case for the establishment of a Department of Taxation as obtained in some other universities but the wisdom of management then, was that the Accounting Department needed more time to mature before a spin off. There also was an effort by the Faculty to mount a Master of Science Degree programme in Accounting with specialization in Taxation. All these efforts, he said, indicate that the Faculty is in alignment with the mission of the Institute to develop Taxation as a separate specialization. He believed that the time is now ripe for a Department of Taxation and assured the delegation that the case will be presented to the Vice Chancellor, Professor Teddy Charles Adias and he was hopeful that it will receive favorable consideration in view of ongoing expansion programmes In the University.
On the request to have career talks with the students, the Dean suggested that they follow up on it for a date when students would have returned from the semester break. The CITN WEEK will be coming up November. They promised to provide the CITN curriculum content to assist in the formation the degree program.

The Yenagoa and District Society of CITN delegation included members of the Society for Women in Taxation (SWIT) led by the Chairperson, Mrs Tonye Buseri FCA, FCTI.
In his vote thanks, Dr. Uche T. Agburuga, the Sub-Dean of the Faculty of Management Sciences, thanked the CITN delegation for deeming it necessary to visit the university and assured that they will always find a willing ally in the Faculty of Management Sciences and the indeed the University.
