The Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), has commenced the construction of an Academic Staff Building for the School of Physical Sciences, marking another milestone in the institution’s infrastructure development drive.

The foundation-laying ceremony took place on Wednesday, August 27, 2025, at the project site and was performed by the Vice Chancellor, Professor Adenike Oladiji, who was represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Development), Professor Sunday Oluyamo.

In attendance were the University Librarian, Dr. Robert Awoyemi; Dean of the School of Physical Sciences, Professor Femi Barnabas Adebola; Professor Ademola Festus Aiyesanmi; Director of Physical Planning, Engineer Oladeji Boyinbode; and other members of the university community.

Speaking at the event, Professor Oluyamo, on behalf of the Vice Chancellor, described the project as the realization of years of commitment and determination. He noted that the new facility would address some of the university’s pressing infrastructural needs while enhancing the capacity of the School of Physical Sciences. He also commended past and present Deans of the School for their relentless contributions to its growth.

The Deputy Vice Chancellor expressed confidence in the contractor handling the project, highlighting the track record of quality delivery within the university. “We do not do substandard jobs at FUTA, and I am delighted that this contractor has consistently executed projects in the university and delivered on time,” he said.

The Director of Physical Planning, Engineer Oladeji Boyinbode, described the project as a landmark moment in the history of the university. He recalled that the Vice Chancellor had envisioned the building years earlier and expressed satisfaction that the dream was finally becoming a reality. He revealed that the two-storey building, designed by professional consultants including Architect Oluwadepo Oyetunde and Engineer Yusuf Adeoye, will accommodate 20 academic professors. Captured in the 2025 budget, the project is scheduled for completion within 30 weeks, subject to timely release of funds by the Federal Government.

The symbolic handover of the project site to the contractor was a key highlight of the event.

In his remarks, the Dean of the School of Physical Sciences, Professor Adebola, expressed appreciation to the university management for prioritizing the development of the School. He expressed optimism that additional laboratories would be built and equipped in the near future to further strengthen teaching and research.

The event concluded on a positive note, with stakeholders confident that the new Academic Staff Building will significantly boost the teaching, research, and administrative functions of the School of Physical Sciences.
