The Federal University of Technology, Akure ,Akure on 22nd and 23rd August , 2023 hosted the maiden edition of a track and field competition tagged FUTA Athletics Classics at the University Sports Complex.
The event which showcased some of the Institution’s best athletes in track and field also attracted competitors from Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State (OAU), Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomosho Oyo State (LAUTECH), and Adekunle Ajasin University Akungba, (AAUA), Ondo State.
The student athletes competed in the 100,200,400,800 and 1500 meters’ race for men and women and long jump, high jump, javelin, shotput and Discuss for men and women as well.
The 4x100m men saw Adebayo Japheth, Popoola Ifedayo, Bello Tope, Showunmi Bolu of team FUTA clinched the first position and team OAU represented by Ogunaike Adegoke, Olasusi Opeyemi, Adeola Abiodun and Salako Joshua came second with the LAUTECH Relay Team coming third.
OAU came first in the 4x400; FUTA came second and third position respectively. FUTA team came first in the 4x100 mixed relay, OAU came second and FUTA team B, also came third.
In the 100m invitation for men , Adesinlore Pelumi of AAU, came first, while Jegede Marian of OAU, came first in the women category.
The FUTA Students Union Sports Director, Amoo Emmanuel, said the event was put together to create awareness and exposure for Team Aquila, the FUTA Athletics team.
Amoo reiterated that the Classic would be expanded to accommodate more athletes and institutions in subsequent editions. He also appreciated the University Management and the Sports Directorate for supporting the event.
Speaking at the event, the Director sports, FUTA, Dr Alayode Ajibua counselled the participants to imbibe the spirit of sportsmanship and see the competition from an angle of an opportunity to improve their skills.
He thanked the management for its usual support and for ensuring that the facilities are not only in good condition but easily accessible for use.
He described the FUTASU Sports Director as a dogged sports lover who has passion for his office and also loves sports generally.
