The Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA) recently hosted its annual SCIENCOON Science Festival, themed “Emerge and Thrive: Integrating Nigerian Heritage in Science, Technology, Entrepreneurship, and Agriculture.” The event successfully combined academic excellence with cultural pride, inspiring students to lead in scientific fields while honoring their Nigerian roots.

Held at FUTA, the festival attracted a diverse audience, including students, faculty, and esteemed speakers. It provided a dynamic platform for discussions that intersected science, culture, and innovation. Amb. Segun, the founding president of SCIENCOON, kicked off the festival with an inspiring speech, reflecting on the club's mission to foster scientific excellence and collaboration among students to address societal challenges. He emphasized that SCIENCOON aims to become Nigeria's largest hub for innovative thinkers, merging academic prowess with cultural awareness. The theme “Emerge and Thrive” encapsulated this mission, encouraging students to excel scientifically while integrating cultural values into their leadership and problem-solving approaches.

The festival’s atmosphere was elevated by a stirring spoken word performance from FUTA student Oluwadunsi Omotayo, whose impactful piece received enthusiastic applause, setting a vibrant tone for the day's activities.

In a compelling keynote lecture, Dr. Elekofehinti, an expert in pharmacology, discussed the transformative role of bioinformatics in drug discovery. He explained how bioinformatics tools streamline the drug research process by analyzing vast datasets to identify potential drug targets, leading to more efficient and cost-effective drug development. His insights into molecular identification and predictive modeling captivated the audience, especially as he highlighted future career opportunities in bioinformatics.

The festival also featured an interactive Kahoot quiz, organized by the Impact Leaders Club. Students enthusiastically competed, with Blessing, a 500-level Microbiology student, emerging as the champion, adding a fun and engaging twist to the festival.

A highlight of the event was a panel discussion moderated by Tolulope Ajayi, featuring experts such as Esedere Abraham, Dr. Macaulay, Professor Badejo, Olufemi Akinola, and Miss Nnena Solomon. They discussed harnessing Nigerian heritage to drive innovation. Esedere Abraham spoke on the importance of integrating traditional knowledge into modern technologies to create locally relevant solutions, while Dr. Macaulay emphasized self-reliance in innovation. Olufemi Akinola presented compelling arguments on how cultural tools can enhance leadership skills, and Miss Nnena Solomon discussed utilizing Nigerian heritage as a brand identity to attract customers. Professor Badejo provided insights on how Nigerian heritage can influence leadership and technological advancements, leaving the audience optimistic about the country’s future.

The festival also showcased students presenting innovative projects that reflected their creativity and critical thinking, impressing both the panel and the audience. A "Best Dressed" competition added cultural flair, with students donning traditional attire that reinforced the event’s theme of merging culture with innovation.

In a closing keynote lecture, Prof. Ganiyu Oboh stressed the vital role of cultural heritage in sustainable national development. He argued that tailoring innovation to Nigeria’s unique environmental and cultural contexts would yield impactful and enduring solutions, resonating deeply with the audience and reinforcing the festival’s core message.

SCIENCOON President Anoro Emmanuel concluded the event with heartfelt gratitude to all participants, emphasizing that “Emerge and Thrive” was not just a theme but a call to action. He urged attendees to continue embracing the fusion of science and culture, emerging as leaders who will thrive in shaping Nigeria’s future.
