The Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA) is set to host the prestigious Organization for Women in Science for the Developing World (OWSD) conference in July 2025. This announcement came during a recent working visit from OWSD members to Vice Chancellor Professor Adenike Oladiji on Thursday, September 27, 2024.

During the meeting, Prof. Folasade Olajuyigbe, the OWSD Nigeria National Vice Chairperson and LOC Chairperson for the upcoming conference, revealed that preparations are already underway, with calls for abstract submissions and details on confirmed speakers circulating widely.

Prof. Olajuyigbe also shared insights from the recent OWSD Southwest maiden biennial conference held at the University of Ibadan, where she represented FUTA as a plenary speaker. In recognition of her contributions, the Vice Chancellor was presented with a plaque of appreciation and conferred with the OWSD Southwest Life Member Award, including a certificate and sash.

Dr. Mosunmola Adeleke, the newly elected OWSD-FUTA Branch Coordinator, expressed gratitude for the Vice Chancellor's continued support, particularly for the funding approved for members who attended the Southwest conference.

In her remarks, Professor Oladiji commended the OWSD members for their visit and pledged ongoing support for the OWSD-FUTA Branch and the national chapter. She also expressed her enthusiasm for the preparations leading up to the 2025 conference.

Accompanying Prof. Olajuyigbe were Dr. Esther Oyebode, OWSD Southwest Treasurer, and newly inaugurated OWSD-FUTA Branch Executives, including Dr. Oluwayomi Faromika (Vice Coordinator), Dr. Oritoke Okeowo (Secretary), Dr. Sadura Akinrinwa (Treasurer), and Mrs. Augustina Ibeto (Financial Secretary).

Founded in 1987 as a program unit of UNESCO, OWSD is the first international forum that unites women scientists from both developing and developed nations, aiming to enhance their roles in development and promote their representation in scientific leadership. The organization provides research training, career development, and networking opportunities for women scientists at various stages of their careers.
