A migration studies expert from Germany, Mr. Joachim Schemer, has led a team to an official visit to the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) where they tabled the need for a potential academic collaboration.

A migration studies expert from Germany, Mr. Joachim Schemer, has led a team to an official visit to the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) where they tabled the need for a potential academic collaboration.

Schemer, who also extend an invitation to a seminar on migration studies, disclosed that the visitto the NOUN headquarters was aimed at strengthening ties between NOUN and the international migration research initiatives, offering a platform for knowledge sharing, joint research, and programme development.

The visitors were received on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Olufemi Peters, by the duo of the Deputy Vice-Chancellors, Academics, Prof. Chiedu Mafiana and, Administration, Prof. Isaac Butswat who emphasised on NOUN’s commitment to expanding its educational scope to address global issues like migration.

Mr. Schemer expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration potential, noting that NOUN’s unique model of Open and Distance Learning could significantly contribute to spreading awareness and understanding of migration issues across Nigeria.

On the invitation to attend an upcoming seminar on migration studies, he said it will focus on current trends, challenges, and policy responses relating to migration, which will attract academics, policy-makers, and migration experts.

The expert added that it will also provide a platform for dialogue on how migration affects the global community, with participants from Turkey, India, Ghana and a few other countries.

Responding,  Prof. Mafiana acknowledged that migration studies are increasingly important in today’s interconnected world, especially for Nigeria, which experiences unique migration challenges and opportunities.

He highlighted NOUN’s dedication to equipping students with a modern, globally-relevant education that addresses current social, economic, and political dynamics.

On his part, Prof. Butswat noted that migration is a critical topic in contemporary research, with significant implications for Nigeria and the broader African region.

He re-echoed his counterpart’s point of NOUN’s administration being focused on providing relevant, globally-oriented education that prepares its students for modern societal challenges, including those surrounding migration and diaspora studies.
