Gombe State Governor, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, has approved the construction of a deep solar-powered borehole to address the persistent water supply challenges faced by Gombe State University (GSU).
This project, implemented by the Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (RUWASSA), is part of the African Development Bank (AfDB)-sponsored Inclusive Basic Service Delivery and Livelihood Empowerment Integrated Project (IBSDLEIP) ¹.
The solar-powered borehole, projected to reach over 200 meters in depth, will provide a sustainable, long-term solution to GSU's water needs. The project is a significant intervention in addressing the university's water crisis, which has resulted in significant costs to secure water, yet supply remained inadequate.
Acting Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sani Ahmed Yauta, expressed profound gratitude to Governor Yahaya, describing the water crisis as one of GSU's most pressing challenges. "The University community has people all over Gombe State and Nigeria as a whole, so any project done here is a project for the entire nation. For this generous intervention, our appreciation is beyond measure," Professor Yauta stated.
The project is a testament to Governor Yahaya's commitment to improving essential infrastructure, particularly in education and public services. Barr. Sani A. A. Haruna, Chairman of Gombe Local Government, reaffirmed the governor's dedication to providing sustainable solutions to the state's challenges.
With the official approval letter delivered to the University by IBSDLEIP Project Coordinator, Engr. Abdurraqib Muhammad Saeed, the project is set to commence immediately, providing a reliable source of water for the university community.
