Governor of Enugu State, Dr. Peter Mbah, has awarded scholarships up to university level along with cash rewards to four students who represented the state and triumphed in the 25th edition of the President’s Inter-Secondary School Debate Championship held in Abuja. This initiative underscores the governor's commitment to education and the significant investments made by his administration in the sector.

The victorious team members included Emmanuella Chukwuma from Holy Rosary College, Enugu; Chiamaka Okwuibe from Queen’s School, Enugu; Goodness Chinedu Chiemerie from St. Patrick’s College, Emene, Enugu; and Chibuikem Ukadike from the College of the Immaculate Conception, CIC, Enugu. The students were prepared and coordinated by Mr. Malachi Eze of CIC and Mrs. Joy Agbala of the Post Secondary School Management Board (PPSMB).

During a reception at the Government House in Enugu, where the team presented the championship trophy to him, Governor Mbah emphasized that their victory is a clear indication that his administration's investments in education are yielding positive results. He highlighted that the state had previously been unable to participate in such competitions for over ten years due to a lack of support.

Governor Mbah reiterated his administration's focus on education as a crucial element for economic development and a strategic approach to combating insecurity. “When we committed to allocating 33 percent of our budget to education, some thought it was mere posturing. But we understood that to achieve a zero percent poverty rate, radical reforms in education were essential,” he said.

The governor further remarked that addressing insecurity in a non-violent manner hinges on providing education and skills to the youth, who might otherwise resort to criminal activities. He stated, “In Enugu State, we believe that if we prioritize education, we can transform our society and ensure a prosperous future for our children.”

In recognition of their achievement, the governor announced that the state would provide additional support for the team as they prepare to represent Nigeria in an upcoming international debate competition in the United States. “We will invest in you so you are well-prepared for the global event. Your educational journey will be supported with scholarships,” he assured.

Commending the students for their accomplishments, Governor Mbah praised Rev. Fr. Hilary Mgbodile, Chairman of the PPSMB, for ensuring that merit was the basis for team selection. “Merit is the cornerstone of this administration. Our focus has always been on selecting the best candidates based on their abilities, not political considerations,” he noted.

Team captain Emmanuella Chukwuma expressed gratitude to the governor for prioritizing education, stating that their success is a testament to the impact of his investment in the sector. “Our achievement reflects the immense talent present in Enugu State’s education system and the potential of our young people. Education is indeed the key to unlocking the potential of the youth and driving economic growth,” she affirmed.

Rev. Fr. Mgbodile also commended Governor Mbah for his transparency and commitment to meritocracy in education. He emphasized that the students emerged through a statewide debate competition, showcasing their abilities rather than being handpicked.
