Historic Leadership Milestone: Professor Amina Salihi Bayero Chairs Inaugural Senate Meeting at Northwest University Kano
In a landmark event for the institution, the Vice-Chancellor of Northwest University Kano (NWUK), Professor Amina Salihi Bayero, presided over her first Senate meeting as substantive head on Thursday, January 22, 2026.
Held at the Senate Chamber on the university’s Main Campus, the meeting marks a historic chapter as Professor Bayero is the first female and first indigenous Vice-Chancellor to lead the institution since its founding.
Addressing an impressive gathering of deans, directors, and senior academics, Professor Bayero expressed deep appreciation for the community’s confidence in her leadership. She emphasized that the advancement of the university’s core mandates—teaching, research, and community service—will be driven by:
Unity and Shared Responsibility: Calling for collective commitment from all staff to ensure institutional progress.
Academic Excellence: Reaffirming her resolve to reposition NWUK as a hub for global scholarly standards.
Infrastructural Growth: Strengthening the university's physical and digital landscape to support a growing student body.
Professor Bayero used the engagement to highlight critical needs for the university's development, including:
Procurement of an ANATOMAGE table for medical training.
Installation of lifts at the City Campus and Main Campus Senate Building.
Acquisition of three additional transformers to support a forthcoming Rural Electrification Agency (REA) mini-grid project.
Deputy Governor Gwarzo congratulated Professor Bayero, describing her as a "capable and deserving leader" who has served as a pioneer staff member of the institution. He reaffirmed the Kano State Government’s commitment to the university, promising to fulfill outstanding pledges, particularly regarding the ANATOMAGE table and furnishing new faculty buildings to alleviate office space shortages.
