ICYMI: Expelled Nigerian Student Achieves First-Class Degree at ATBU, Pursues Master's Degree at Cambridge

Angela Sughnen, a young Nigerian woman who was expelled for examination misconduct in her final year, has returned to academia and achieved a first-class degree in Agriculture. Angela is currently pursuing an MPhil in Biological Sciences, specializing in the Crop Science pathway, at the University of Cambridge.

Angela Sughnen, a young Nigerian woman who was expelled for examination misconduct in her final year, has returned to academia and achieved a first-class degree in Agriculture.

Angela obtained her Bachelor of Agriculture Technology in Crop Production at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Nigeria.

Reflecting on her journey, Angela shared on Facebook that during her fourth year as an undergraduate student, she was excelling academically with a second-class upper-division grade until she faced an unfortunate incident leading to her expulsion due to examination misconduct. In her own words, Angela described the expulsion as a devastating blow that shattered her perceived success and left her feeling broken, insulted, and mocked, leading to a period of depression.

Despite these challenges, Angela’s love for school, especially studying agriculture, motivated her to take immediate action. She applied to another university and continued her education. “Everyone who knows me personally knows how much I love school and the idea of it and most importantly the idea of being an Agricultural student, so you can imagine how broken I was to be in the position of getting expelled from the university, it was the most difficult period of my life,” Angela said.

In the midst of her struggles, Angela took decisive action by applying to another university before her expulsion was formalized. Fortunately, she was admitted to Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University. She explained that adapting to the new environment was challenging, but she remained determined to succeed. She focused on her studies and ensured she avoided any form of exam misconduct.

“Don’t talk to me as I’ll definitely not talk to you! I wrote every single paper from the first to the last exam this time without any misconduct because if God had to help me, I had to keep my side of the deal,” she said.

With perseverance and determination, Angela earned her degree in her most desired field.  Angela is currently pursuing an MPhil in Biological Sciences, specializing in the Crop Science pathway, at the University of Cambridge. Her passion lies in promoting sustainable food production to achieve food security and enhance nutrition.
