The National Universities Commission (NUC) has reaffirmed its commitment to encouraging the establishment of more universities in Nigeria, citing the nation’s population size and low literacy levels as key factors.
Speaking at the 22nd convocation ceremony of Igbinedion University, Okada, Edo State, on Friday, Acting Executive Secretary of the NUC, Mr. Chris Maiyaki, highlighted the need for expanding tertiary education opportunities.
“Available statistics show that Nigeria needs more universities to harness its potential. The NUC, in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Education, will continue to approve the establishment of universities while maintaining quality standards,” Maiyaki stated.
He urged universities to enhance staff capacity building and improve governance in resource management, noting challenges in infrastructure and academic delivery. He also emphasized the importance of restoring stability to the academic calendar, updating curricula, and leveraging ICT to position Nigerian universities on the global stage.
