Imo Students Protest Against High Fees and Inadequate Amenities in Tertiary Institutions

Students in Imo State took to the streets on Friday to protest against the high costs of living, exorbitant school fees, and inadequate amenities in educational institutions. They voiced their grievances, calling on both the federal and state governments to address issues such as intimidation, frequent fee hikes, and excessive charges for handouts and textbooks.

The protesters, comprised mainly of students from various tertiary institutions including the Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO), Imo State University, Owerri (IMSU), and Federal Polytechnic Nekede, highlighted the need for a conducive learning environment and demanded improvements in infrastructure and facilities.

The Vice President of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Ahaneku Valentine Nzubechi, assured the protesting students that their concerns would be relayed to the appropriate authorities. He emphasized the commitment of the Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, and other government officials to address the issues raised by the students.

NANS Public Relations Officer, Comr. Achebe Chizzy, underscored the need for a comprehensive overhaul of tertiary institutions in Imo State to enhance the quality of education. He echoed the students' demands for better educational standards and urged the government to implement policies that prioritize the well-being of students and improve the overall educational environment in the state.
