"International Cooperation is the Way to Address Global Challenges," says EU Ambassador
The Ambassador of the European Union to Nigeria and ECOWAS, His Excellency Gautier Mignot, has stressed the need to deploy international cooperation as a crucial way to address global challenges.
He stressed this position in a public lecture entitled “Nigeria and the European Union: Together in Challenging Times” which he delivered at the University of Ibadan.
The Ambassador said humanity currently faces unprecedented challenges arising from climate change, overexploitation of natural resources, biodiversity loss, rapid technological advancement, growing disinformation and widening social inequalities, which threaten its existence, disrupt economic activities, fuel conflicts and undermine social inclusion across the globe.

He, however, noted that solutions to these challenges already exist, emphasizing that international cooperation is the most effective response to global challenges.
He highlighted the European Union’s efforts in promoting sustainable development, climate action and responsible technological innovation, asserting that the union has demonstrated that cooperation, when properly managed and guided by clear rules, can deliver peace, prosperity and stability.
Ambassador Mignot disclosed that the European Union has adopted progressive regulations to ensure that emerging technologies remain human-centered and beneficial to society rather than serving the interests of a few individuals.
He noted that countries that once experienced devastating wars have become united through shared values, democratic institutions and mutually agreed rules, adding that cooperation remains essential for peace, prosperity and sustainable development.
The Ambassador, however, expressed concern over growing threats to global cooperation, citing conflicts in different parts of the world and actions by some global actors that undermine international rules and multilateral engagement.
He lamented that these developments have contributed to rising global instability and displacement of populations, maintaining that countries and institutions that believe in fairness, cooperation and respect for international rules must continue to strengthen partnerships and work together to address common challenges.
He described the EU-Nigeria relationship as one built on shared values such as democracy, human rights, rule of law, tolerance and inclusive economic development.
He disclosed that the European Union remains Nigeria’s largest trading partner and one of its leading sources of foreign direct investment, adding that the partnership extends beyond trade to include investments in sustainable development, job creation, renewable energy, agriculture, health, digital infrastructure and education.
Ambassador Mignot also disclosed that Oyo State is benefitting from several European Union-supported projects in agriculture, social protection and technological innovation through partnerships with institutions such as the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), development agencies and other stakeholders.
According to him, these interventions support agricultural value chains, climate-smart farming practices, social protection systems and technology-driven solutions aimed at improving productivity and livelihoods.
The EC diplomat also highlighted opportunities available to Nigerian students, researchers and higher education institutions through programmes such as Erasmus Plus, Erasmus Mundus, the Intra-African Mobility Scheme and Horizon Europe, which support academic mobility, research collaboration and innovation.
He, however, cautioned that while international assistance can accelerate development, it cannot replace national responsibility and commitment.
He encouraged students to see themselves as future leaders capable of shaping a better future for Nigeria and the world, stressing that the European Union remains committed to supporting initiatives that promote education, innovation, inclusion and sustainable development, while strengthening its partnership with Nigeria.
The Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academic of the University of Ibadan Professor Juwon Arotiba, FICD, FWACS, who delivered a speech on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Kayode O. Adebowale, mni, FAS, fspsp, described the lecture as timely and significant.
He noted that nations and institutions across the world are currently navigating economic uncertainties, climate change, security concerns, technological disruptions and evolving geopolitical realities.
He stated that the longstanding relationship between Nigeria and the European Union has been characterized by cooperation, mutual respect and a shared commitment to sustainable development, democratic governance, education, innovation and human capital development.
Professor Arotiba restated that the University of Ibadan values partnerships that promote knowledge exchange, research collaboration and the advancement of solutions to both global and local challenges.
The Deputy Vice-Chancellor observed that the lecture would provide an opportunity for meaningful reflection on how Nigeria and the European Union could further strengthen their partnership in addressing contemporary challenges while promoting inclusive growth and shared prosperity.
He expressed confidence that the Ambassador’s presentation would stimulate productive discussions and inspire new avenues for collaboration between institutions, nations and peoples.
Ambassador Gautier Mignot was accompanied to the university by Leila Ben Amor Mathieu, the Head of Human Development and a delegate of the EU to the Federal Republic of Nigeria and ECOWAS.
