Joint Efforts: ABSU VC and Traditional Rulers Unite Against Banditry in Uturu

In a bid to tackle rising insecurity in and around the Uturu community of Abia State, traditional rulers from Isuikwuato Local Government Area (LGA) have joined forces with the Vice Chancellor of Abia State University (ABSU), Professor Maxwell Onyemachi Ogbulu.

The collective stance of the traditional rulers was articulated during their official visit to the office of Prof. Ogbulu. Led by Eze Charles Onuoha, the Chairman of the Uturu Council of Traditional Rulers, the monarchs expressed deep concern over the increasing criminal activities affecting the peace and socio-economic growth of Uturu and its neighboring towns.

The traditional rulers highlighted various criminal elements, including kidnappings, rape, destruction of farms, and armed robbery, that have plagued the once-peaceful Uturu. They lamented the negative impact of these activities on the community and its residents.

However, the royal fathers commended Prof. Ogbulu for implementing effective security strategies to safeguard students, staff, and guardians within the ABSU community. They pledged unwavering support to the Vice Chancellor and the university's management in their efforts to secure the host community.

Responding to the traditional rulers, Prof. Ogbulu affirmed that his administration has implemented several security measures to ensure the safety of individuals in and around the ABSU community. He appealed for continued support from the traditional rulers to restore Uturu to its former peaceful state, expressing gratitude for their existing support.

The Vice Chancellor also took the opportunity to commend Governor Alex Otti, the Visitor to the University, for his proactive policies in both security and education.

Notably, the roads connecting Uturu to Okigwe, Ihube, and Isuikwuato have been identified as hotspots for criminal activities, including kidnapping and armed robbery. The community has witnessed peaceful protests by women and youths in 2021 and 2022, denouncing the alleged crimes and calling for enhanced security measures.
