Justin Welby to Deliver ABU Convocation Lecture on National Unity and Harmony

The 105th Archbishop of Canterbury, the Right Reverend and Right Honourable Justin Welby, GCVO, is set to deliver a public lecture at Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, on Thursday, January 29, 2026.

The lecture, titled “Building Inter-Ethnic and Religious Harmony in Nigeria: Pathways to National Unity,” forms a major highlight of the university’s 45th Convocation Ceremony.

Archbishop Welby, who served as the spiritual leader of the global Anglican Communion from 2013 until early 2025, is widely recognised for his extensive work in peacebuilding and reconciliation, including efforts in Nigeria. He previously served as Co-Director of Coventry Cathedral’s International Centre for Reconciliation, where he was involved in mediating conflicts, notably between Shell Oil and the Ogoni people in 2005, as well as peace initiatives across the Middle East.

On the global stage, Welby officiated at the state funeral of Queen Elizabeth II in 2022 and presided over the coronation of King Charles III in 2023. His acceptance of ABU’s invitation underscores the institution’s commitment to advancing national conversations on interfaith dialogue, peacebuilding, and social cohesion.

The lecture is expected to attract a distinguished audience, including former presidents, state governors, ministers, as well as traditional and religious leaders from across the country.

As part of activities marking the 45th Convocation Week, the university will also host a pre-convocation lecture by World Trade Organization Director-General, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, on Friday, January 30. The main convocation ceremony is scheduled for Saturday, January 31, 2026.
