KASU Professor Dr. Basira Kankia Lawal  Selected for the Mandela Washington Fellowship

In an impressive development, Dr. Basira Kankia Lawal from the Department of Clinical Pharmacy and Pharmacy Management, Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Kaduna State University (KASU), has been selected to participate in the upcoming 2024 Mandela Washington Fellowship in the United States of America.

This prestigious program is a flagship initiative of the Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI), which began in 2014 and is now welcoming its 10th cohort.

The program received over 50,000 applications from across sub-Saharan Africa, including over 9,500 from Nigeria. Of these, 56 participants from Nigeria were chosen, including Dr. Lawal from KASU.

Dr. Lawal has been selected for the leadership in public management track, one of the three tracks offered by the program, alongside leadership in business and leadership in civic engagement. She has been posted to the University of Minnesota - Twin Cities.

Starting in June 2024, participants will undergo six weeks of training that empowers young leaders through academic coursework, leadership training, mentoring, networking, professional opportunities, and local community engagement. Afterwards, all participants will conclude their fellowship at Washington DC during a 3-day summit where they will engage with U.S. leaders in the business, government, and nonprofit sectors. 

Kaduna State University eagerly anticipates the benefits of the knowledge Dr. Lawal will gain from this initiative.
