The Rector of Kwara State Polytechnic, Engineer Dr. Abdul Jimoh Muhammed, has expressed deep sadness over the sudden death of Abdulqoyum Bamidele, a National Diploma II (ND2) student of Electrical Electronic Engineering. The tragic incident reportedly occurred on Wednesday, September 4, 2024, in the GRA area of Ilorin, the Kwara State capital.

In a statement released by the Polytechnic’s spokesperson, Mrs. Halimat Garba, the exact circumstances of the student's death remain uncertain, with conflicting reports circulating. The Polytechnic management is committed to ensuring that justice is served once the investigation is complete.

Dr. Abdul Jimoh Muhammed commended the students for remaining calm and refraining from any form of retaliation, urging them to trust the authorities to handle the situation. He also extended his heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased and the Polytechnic community, praying for strength to bear the loss.

There are also reports of a protest by students on Wednesday, during which Oyun Road was blocked. Tensions escalated when police arrived to disperse the protest, with claims that a fatal shooting occurred during the confrontation.

The Students’ Union Government (SUG) of Kwara Polytechnic has urged all students to remain calm. In a statement signed by SUG president Saheed Ishola and general secretary Oni Joseph, the union assured students that they are working with relevant authorities to ensure justice is served and called for peaceful conduct as investigations continue.
