The meeting followed the recent killing of Abdulqoyyum Abdulyekeen, a student of Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin, allegedly by a police officer.
A crucial meeting was held today between the Kwara State Police Commissioner, Mr. Victor Olaiya, and student leaders to address rising concerns over harassment and police brutality in the state. The meeting followed the recent killing of Abdulqoyyum Abdulyekeen, a student of Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin, allegedly by a police officer.
During the meeting, CP Olaiya confirmed that the police officers involved in the incident have been identified, arrested, and transferred to the Force Headquarters in Abuja for further interrogation. He assured that upon the conclusion of investigations, the officers would face severe punishment and trial in line with the constitution.
To prevent further abuses, a new police-student relations committee has been formed. The committee includes the Kwara NANS chairman, student union presidents from public tertiary institutions, and government representatives. This committee will collaborate with the Kwara Police Command to provide timely information on cases of student harassment across campuses and communities.
Other key members of the committee include PPRO DSP Ejire Adetoun, ASP Yusuf Zahraddeen Chiri, and ASP Abdullahi Kinta of the SIB division. The government will be represented by the Special Assistant to the Governor on Student Affairs, Comrade Salami Wasiu Onidugbe.
The initiative, championed by Comrade Onidugbe, aims to enhance the monitoring of police operations and curb abuse and extortion, aligning with Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq’s vision for peace and stability in Kwara State.
