Kwara State University Management Condemns Student Protest at CAILS

The Management of Kwara State University (KWASU), Malete, has issued a strong condemnation of the recent protest by students at its Study Centre located at the Kwara State College of Arabic and Islamic Legal Studies (CAILS). The university described the demonstration as unwarranted and instigated by mischief makers aiming to undermine the integrity of the scheduled examinations.

In a statement released by the Registrar, Dr. Kikeloma Sallee, in Ilorin, the management rejected claims from CAILS that it had not been consulted regarding the decision to change the examination venue, labeling these assertions as baseless and mischievous.

Dr. Sallee clarified, “The public needs to note that Kwara State University has two external locations for its Sandwich Degree Programme: Kwara State College of Arabic and Islamic Legal Studies and Imam Hamzat College of Education. These two institutions are not affiliated with Kwara State University. Rather, they serve as study centres for the university's sandwich degree programme, implying that the concerned students are fully under the administration of Kwara State University.”

The Registrar emphasized that KWASU is not obligated to seek authorization from CAILS when making decisions regarding these students. Consequently, all sandwich degree students at the CAILS study centre will adhere to the standards set forth by KWASU.

The decision to centralize the examination venue for all sandwich degree students was made to protect the integrity of the examination and ensure standardization in the evaluation process. This decision was communicated to students during an orientation exercise conducted by KWASU's Institute of Education (IOE) on Wednesday, October 2, 2024.

The designated venue, the KWASU Conference Centre located behind Ayoka Petrol Station along Old Jebba Road in the Agric area of Ilorin, was expressly communicated to students at this orientation nearly two weeks prior to the examinations, contrary to claims from CAILS management that this information was given only three days before the exam.

For clarity, Dr. Sallee reiterated, “Kwara State University will not compromise the quality of any of its processes, nor will the university be swayed by propaganda aimed at coercing it into deviating from its commitment to maintaining the quality of its products.”

The management has affirmed that the examination for the sandwich degree programme will proceed as planned at the KWASU Conference Centre, advising all affected students to take note.
