No fewer than 383 engineering graduates of Kwara State University (KWASU) have been formally inducted as Graduate Members of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), marking a significant milestone in their transition into professional engineering practice.

The induction ceremony and public lecture were held on Monday, December 15, 2025, and jointly organised by the NSE Ilorin Branch and the Faculty of Engineering and Technology, KWASU.

In his remarks, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Shaykh-Luqman Jimoh, described KWASU engineering graduates as products of a distinct training model that combines rigorous academic instruction with practical exposure and entrepreneurial development. He noted that, beyond technical competence, the University equips its graduates with foundational skills for establishing and managing businesses, positioning them for relevance in a competitive global environment.

Declaring the ceremony open, the Vice-Chancellor, represented by the Dean of the Faculty of Pure and Applied Sciences, Professor Olushola James, urged the inductees to uphold the ethics and professional standards of engineering practice. He cautioned that negligence in the profession carries far-reaching consequences for individuals, institutions, and society at large.

In her welcome address, the President of the Nigerian Society of Engineers and Chairman of the occasion, Engr. Margaret Aina Oguntala, FNSE, represented by Engr. Kolawole Yusuf, FNSE, described the school-based induction as a formal call to national service. She charged the graduates to deploy their knowledge and skills towards building sustainable infrastructure and driving national development.

The Chairman of the NSE Ilorin Branch, Dr. O. A. Ogunjirin, emphasised that engineering remains central to nation-building and encouraged the inductees to participate actively in the affairs of the Society. He assured them of the NSE’s commitment to mentorship and professional guidance as they advance in their careers.

Also speaking, the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Technology, Engr. Professor Abdulbaqi Toyin Abdulrahim, admonished the graduates to embrace ethical practice and to view engineering not merely as a profession, but as service to humanity.

The public lecture, themed “Sustainable Engineering for a Blue Economy: The Path to Environmental Responsibility and Green Careers,” was delivered by Engr. Professor J. K. Odusote. He underscored the critical role of sustainable engineering in economic development, noting that the growth of a viable blue economy depends on the protection and responsible management of oceans, seas, rivers, and other water resources.

The event also featured the presentation of prizes and awards to outstanding students across various departments and facilities in recognition of academic excellence and exceptional performance.
