The Lagos State University College of Medicine (LASUCOM) is set to undergo a significant infrastructural transformation following the approval of Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu. The governor has sanctioned a series of expansion and renovation projects aimed at enhancing medical education and healthcare delivery in Lagos State.

The approved projects, awarded to contractors under the supervision of the Lagos State Infrastructure Asset Management Agency (LASIAMA), mark the first phase of a long-term development plan for LASUCOM. These projects include the renovation of the Histology and Anatomy Laboratories in Ikeja, as well as the conversion of the CACOVID Centre at Mainland Hospital, Yaba, and the Cardo-Renal Center in Gbagada into annexes of the college.

The Honourable Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, and the Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Mr. Tolani Sule, led an inspection visit to the project sites on March 26th and 27th, 2025. They were joined by LASUCOM executives and other key stakeholders to assess the facilities, engage with contractors, and discuss the project commencement timeline.

Speaking on the significance of the initiative, Prof. Abayomi described the expansion as a "crucial step in addressing the shortage of human resources in the health sector." He emphasized that the completion of Phase 1 within four months will pave the way for new annexes, further strengthening LASUCOM's capacity.

Echoing similar sentiments, Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Mr. Tolani Sule, highlighted the project's importance in advancing the state's healthcare workforce. "This project represents a greater Lagos rising. By expanding the workforce in the health sector, we are securing the future of healthcare delivery in our state," he stated.

The Vice-Chancellor of Lagos State University expressed his delight at the development, revealing that accrediting bodies such as the National Universities Commission (NUC), the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN), and the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN) have pledged to commence accreditation processes within a year.

Prof. Olufemi Idowu, the Provost of LASUCOM, also conveyed his appreciation to Governor Sanwo-Olu for his continued commitment to medical education and healthcare infrastructure. He described the expansion as "wonderful news" that has been warmly received by faculty members and staff. According to him, the project aligns with the government’s broader plans to tackle the shortage of medical professionals in the state while ensuring LASUCOM remains a hub for world-class medical training and research.

Ms. Adenike Adekanbi, General Manager of LASIAMA, reassured stakeholders of the agency’s dedication to delivering quality work within the stipulated timeframe. "We have worked at this site before and understand the landscape. With the support of LASUCOM, we are confident in meeting the four-month deadline," she affirmed.

The inspection visit concluded with a symbolic handing-over ceremony at the Cardo-Renal Centre, Gbagada, where contracts were officially signed and transferred to the contractors, marking the transition from planning to execution. The milestone underscores the Lagos State Government's unwavering commitment to strengthening healthcare education and services for the benefit of residents and future medical professionals.
