LASU Pro-Chancellor Urges LASUCOM Staff to Drive Research and Innovation for Global Recognition
The Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the 13th Governing Council of Lagos State University (LASU), Mr. Babatunde Ogala, SAN, OFR, has called on staff of the Lagos State University College of Medicine (LASUCOM) to intensify their efforts in research and innovation as a means of enhancing the University’s national and international profile.

Speaking on Monday, 2nd March 2026, during the Council’s annual campus tour at the Ikeja Campus, home of LASUCOM, Mr. Ogala emphasized that cutting-edge research, strategic collaborations, and innovative thinking are critical for positioning the College and LASU for global prominence.
“As the pride of LASU, we expect you to make us truly proud. Let us see your ground-breaking research and innovative work that will stand out in the larger society,” he urged.
He further revealed that the Governing Council has developed a strategic plan to elevate the University through enhanced research output, strategic partnerships, and improved access to grants. Staff were encouraged to submit robust proposals and ideas that reflect the University’s strengths and attract external funding.
In her remarks, Vice-Chancellor Professor Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, mni, NPOM, called on staff to show full commitment to resource assessment and accreditation processes, noting that the credibility and sustainability of LASUCOM depend on successful accreditation outcomes.

The Provost of LASUCOM, Professor Olufemi Idowu, outlined that the College comprises 32 departments, six faculties, and seven professional programmes, highlighting its key role in training doctors, pharmacists, and medical laboratory scientists. He also briefed the Council on preparations for accreditation across all programmes and ongoing phased expansions at the Yaba and Gbagada annexes, assuring that internal controls and administrative systems are being strengthened to maintain quality.
Following the briefing, the Council toured several facilities, including laboratories, departmental libraries, the Information Unit, the Biomedical Communications Centre, the Departments of Physiology and Anatomy, the Faculty of Dentistry, and ongoing renovations of a 90-bed hostel. The tour concluded at the Clinical Skills Laboratories, where an exit meeting was held.
Mr. Ogala commended LASUCOM management and staff for their prudent resource management, assured the College of the Council’s commitment to address identified needs, and praised the Provost and management team for their dedication.
The final phase of the Governing Council’s tour will take place at the Epe Campus, with the date to be announced.
