Lagos State University has maintained its dominance in national admission statistics, emerging as Nigeria’s most subscribed university in the 2026 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) admission cycle with 84,326 first-choice applications.
The latest figures, released by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) during the 2026 Policy Meeting on Admissions in Abuja on Monday, May 11, 2026, confirm LASU’s position as the country’s leading choice for prospective undergraduates.
According to the data, University of Lagos followed with 78,240 applications, while Obafemi Awolowo University ranked third with 60,370 applications.
The performance places Lagos State University at the top of Nigeria’s university subscription table for the second consecutive year, reinforcing its status as the “University of First Choice.”
Over recent admission cycles, the institution has shown a consistent upward trajectory, moving from outside the top ten in earlier years to third position in 2023 with over 55,000 applicants, second position in 2024 with 62,601 applicants, and first position in 2025 with over 70,000 applications. The 2026 figure of 84,326 now extends that growth trend.

Education stakeholders attribute the surge in applications to increasing public confidence in the university’s academic stability, infrastructure development, digital transformation, and institutional reforms aimed at improving learning outcomes and student experience.
Reacting to the development, the Vice-Chancellor, Distinguished Professor Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, expressed appreciation to the Lagos State Government for its continued support and strategic investment in the institution.
She noted that the achievement reflects sustained efforts by the university community to strengthen its academic reputation and global competitiveness through improved teaching standards, research output, and innovation-driven learning.
She further assured prospective students that Lagos State University remains committed to providing a stable academic environment, industry-relevant programmes, and a holistic educational experience designed to produce graduates equipped for leadership in a competitive global economy.
With this performance, LASU continues to consolidate its position as one of the most sought-after tertiary institutions in Nigeria and a major player in the country’s higher education landscape.
