The Vice-Chancellor of Lagos State University (LASU), Professor Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, has congratulated Professor Odion Akhaine on his conferment of the Hero of Democracy Award by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu during the 2026 Democracy Day celebration.
Speaking on behalf of the university's management, staff, students, and the wider LASU community, the Vice-Chancellor described the national honour as a fitting recognition of Professor Akhaine's long-standing contributions to democracy, human rights, and constitutional governance in Nigeria.
Professor Akhaine, a Professor of Political Science in the Faculty of Social Sciences, is widely recognised as one of Nigeria's leading pro-democracy activists. Throughout the military era, he played prominent roles in several democratic movements, serving as General Secretary of the Campaign for Democracy (CD) and later as Joint Secretary and General Secretary of the United Action for Democracy (UAD).
His activism during the struggle against military rule led to his detention and solitary confinement under the regime of late General Sani Abacha between 1995 and 1996. During that period, Amnesty International designated him a Prisoner of Conscience in recognition of the circumstances surrounding his incarceration.

Over the years, Professor Akhaine has remained actively involved in promoting democratic governance, constitutionalism, and human rights. He currently serves as Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Centre for Constitutionalism and Demilitarisation and sits on the governing boards of several institutions and civil society organisations.
Professor Olatunji-Bello stated that the Hero of Democracy Award reflects Professor Akhaine's courage, sacrifice, resilience, and unwavering commitment to nation-building. She noted that his life's work continues to inspire younger generations and reinforces the values of integrity, patriotism, and public service.
The Vice-Chancellor further described the honour as a source of pride for Lagos State University and the academic community, adding that it highlights the institution's contribution to national development through scholarship, advocacy, and civic engagement.
The university community joined in celebrating the award and wished Professor Akhaine continued good health and greater accomplishments in his service to humanity and the nation.
