LUTH Responds to Allegations of Negligence in the Death of Mr. Olaleye Franklin Adenibuyan

The Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) has addressed allegations of negligence surrounding the unfortunate demise of Mr. Olaleye Franklin Adenibuyan, who passed away while receiving medical care at the facility.

In a statement issued by Dr. Ayodeji Oluwole, Chairman of the Medical Advisory Committee at LUTH, the hospital expressed condolences to the family of the deceased. Dr. Oluwole clarified that Mr. Adenibuyan was admitted to LUTH on January 15, 2024, in a deeply unconscious state. Upon admission, he was promptly attended to by a team of neurologists and neurosurgeons at the Emergency Department, where efforts were made to stabilize his condition.

Due to the severity of his condition, Mr. Adenibuyan was subsequently transferred to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for critical care. In the ICU, his care was overseen by a multidisciplinary team comprising neurosurgeons, intensivists, and ICU nurses. Throughout his hospitalization, the medical team maintained direct communication with Mr. Adenibuyan's family, ensuring they were kept informed about his condition and treatment plan.

Dr. Oluwole refuted claims of inadequate critical care equipment at LUTH, stating that while equipment downtime can occur, the hospital has contingency plans in place to address such situations. He emphasized that LUTH possesses functional imaging facilities, including MRI, X-ray, ultrasonography, fluoroscopy, and mammography machines.

Regarding specific medical interventions, Dr. Oluwole explained that decisions regarding the deployment of equipment such as the intracranial pressure (ICP) monitor are made by the attending neurosurgeons. He clarified that the timing of such interventions is carefully considered, taking into account the potential benefits and risks to the patient.

Despite preparations for surgical intervention, Mr. Adenibuyan unfortunately experienced a cardiac arrest from which he could not be revived. In response to the circumstances surrounding his death, LUTH has initiated an internal investigation committee to thoroughly examine the allegations and determine any areas for improvement.
